Memorial Day Weekend unofficially marks the beginning of summer; and it is increasingly devoted to shopping sales, family get-togethers, barbeque parties and trips to the beach rather than paying tribute to Fallen Military Members. Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, was established in 1868 and commemorates a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service.
As I pondered this question “What is Memorial Day?” I thought about what does Memorial Day really mean to me; and then, I asked myself, “What does Memorial Day mean to others — What are their views and values regarding Memorial Day?”
I asked many Americans “What does Memorial Day mean to you?” and found that the majority have forgotten the true meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. I was surprised to find not one person gave me the answer I wanted to hear, the true meaning. And almost all did not know proper American Flag etiquette for this day of remembrance which is to fly our Flag at half staff until noon and at full staff from noon to sunset. Sad to say, I was one of those Americans. Not being from a military family background and even though I was told that I did have family members who served, I did not understand the true meaning and importance of Memorial Day. It wasn’t until after losing my son, Isaac, to the war, Operation Iraqi Freedom, in 2007 that I truly understood and respected Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is a bittersweet day for me. Isaac was born on Memorial Day Weekend 1981. I joyously celebrated his life the day he came into this world; and now, I lovingly and proudly commemorate and remember the ultimate sacrifice he paid to support and defend the United States of America.
We must remind and re-educate our fellow Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day! To ensure the sacrifices of America’s Fallen Heroes are never forgotten, Congress passed and the President signed into law on December 28, 2000 the “National Moment of Remembrance” act which is to ask that all Americans at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day pause in act of national unity for one minute as a way to honor those who died in service to the United States of America.
We must never forget that we live in FREEDOM because of the Men and Women who with no questions asked signed a blank check with the amount payable of their lives!
FREEDOM IS NOT FREE...
IT IS PAID SELFLESSLY WITH THE BLOOD OF OUR HEROES…

Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather… I think it’s always warm where Isaac is… and he keeps us warm when we remember him…

“Without belittling the courage with which men (or woman) have died, we should not forget those acts of courage which with they lived. The courage of life is often a less dramatic spectacle than the courage of a final moment; but it is no less a magnificent example of triumph over tragedy…”

"I SALUTE YOU" - It's a phrase we hear from the time we are young.
